Shaping sustainable and informed policy

In today’s interconnected world, where complex issues transcend borders, the intersection of scientific progress and societal needs has never been more critical. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and emerging health threats demand innovative solutions that bridge the gap between research laboratories and public policy. This necessitates a new generation of scientists who can effectively communicate their findings and actively participate in shaping sustainable policies at local, national, and international levels. To address this, our summer school aims to equip early-career scientists and engineers with the tools and insights needed to engage meaningfully with society beyond their research environments.

  1. The potential impact of scientific evidence on public decision-making processes across various governance levels.
  2. Methodologies for defining, measuring, and evaluating scientific impact, with a focus on the ethical implications of innovation in sustainability.
  3. Best practices in science communication, including techniques for translating complex scientific concepts for non-expert audiences.
  4. Career pathways and opportunities for scientists and engineers to actively contribute to societal change.
  5. Skill development workshops focusing on policy brief writing, public speaking, media engagement, and stakeholder analysis in the context of sustainability challenges.

The Summer School will take place from 18 to 22 August 2025.
